Dear Friends:

We can all feel pleased with a very successful Tree Chipping two weeks ago. A record 720 trees were chipped and many, many bags of mulch were taken off by people to put in their tree pits or gardens. Several truck loads of mulch went to Red Hook Park for the garden there. All in all, it was a wonderful Community Event and we can be quite proud of our efforts.

Thanks to our Members: Linda Blyer, Sarah Erlij, John Kibbe, Gale, Ian and Tom Synnott, Georgia Willett and Dick Van Bolt.

AND Leroy Branch of CB-6 who negotiated with Sanitation not to pick up trees the week before. Tom Ching, Deputy Director of Operations for Brooklyn Parks who helped keep things moving and worked with me filling mulch bags. Andy Rabb, Brooklyn Forester who provided much-needed moral support at a crucial moment.

AND the very helpful Boy Scouts of Troop 815—Lou Garcia, Scout Master and Troop 213—Rich Kelley, Scout Master and Chris Conner, Ass’t Scout Master—who cheerfully gathered trees from streets and trucks.

AND OF COURSE Hollis Fitch, Master Chipper, whose efficiency and good humor made it all possible.

With thanks and best wishes,

Tom Synnott, Co-chair

Despite the cold weather and the threat of deep snow (which never materialized) we had a record tree chipping–631 trees. A good deal of mulch was given back to parents and children in Mulchfest bags provided by our friend and Brooklyn Forester, Andy Rabb.

Many people helped make this a successful neighborhood event as well. For the Tree Fund we had Dick Van Bolt, Sarah Erlij, John Kibbe, Georgia Willett,Tony Zinsser, Proctor Schenk,Gale, Ian and Tom Synnott and a new addition to our group, Jennifer Stoody. Three troops of boy scouts did yeoman work gathering trees from nearby blocks, pulling trees to the chipper and disentangling lights and ornaments from the trees. Troop 815–Scout Master Louis Garcia–and Troop 213–Scout Master Rich Kelley and Ass’t Scout Master Chris Conner– made the work go faster and seem fun at the same time. I think there was a third troop but I don’t have their number at this time.

Two truck-loads of mulch went to Red Hook Park, where they will improve the fields.

We were fortunate to be able to get warmed up and have hot chocolates at the new coffee shop ‘Ted and Honey’ which bore up well with the noise.

Finally, Hollis Fitch and his able helper from Prospect Tree Service made it all possible.

Thanks to everyone for all your hard work.

As ever,
Tom

It may have been a sapling, but it looked like a stick. Diane Dillon, for one, was fairly skeptical that the branch her elderly neighbor stuck in the ground in front of his Cobble Hill brownstone one day in the late 1960s — a twig, no thicker than her finger — would ever amount to much. She was pretty sure the wind would just blow it away….

The tree, on Kane Street near Tompkins Place, became a giant, with branches that reach across Kane, roots that have torn apart the sidewalk, and a trunk wrapped in vines that leans into the street like an old man warning cars away.

Despite a cold dreary morning, our Plant Sale on May 3rd turned out to be a super success! I know it was hard work and took longer than any of us could have wished ( We packed up at 5:00pm), but it was well worth everyone’s efforts.

We also made some important donations:

1. Seventy geraniums in 4 inch pots to the Cobble Hill Nursing Home. They were much enjoyed by patients and staff.

2. Twelve flats of mixed plants were given toPS 29 for the Children’s Garden and were gratefully received. Two of the men from the maintenance team picked them up from Dick’s front yard on Monday morning, and were truly delighted.

3. Several flats for Cobble Hil Park, picked up by Barbara Krongel.

4. Three flats to 250 Baltic Street for the small planters.

In addition it was a really nice community event. Joan Millman, our NY Assemblywoman came by to see how it was going as did Murray Adams, President of the Cobble Hill Association.

Finally Alice Weatherford and Sarah Erlij vastly expanded our selection of plants, delighting our traditional customers.

So, despite the extra hours involved and the considerable amount of material that had to be moved around, I think we can be proud of what we accomplished. I know that I am very grateful to all of you.

Thank you very much,
